What is the Canine Good Citizen Test?

The AKC Canine Good Citizen Test is a nationally recognized program created by the American Kennel Club. It’s designed to evaluate how well your dog behaves in real-world situations.

Dogs who pass the CGC test demonstrate that they:

  • Are under control around distractions

  • Show polite behavior with people and other dogs

  • Respond reliably to common commands

  • Are prepared to behave appropriately in public settings

Once your dog passes, you'll receive:

  • An official certificate from the AKC

  • Inclusion in the AKC's CGC records

  • A well-earned reputation as a responsible pet parent

What Is the CGC Program?

The CGC program is a two-part initiative that focuses on:

  • Educating dog owners on responsible pet ownership

  • Certifying dogs who display reliable, well-mannered behavior

The test is non-competitive and open to all dogs purebred or mixed breed. Dogs who pass all 10 test items earn an official certificate and may even receive the CGC title if registered with AKC, PAL, or AKC Canine Partners. You’ll be proud to add “CGC” after your dog’s name!

Our goal is to make the experience positive, educational, and fun not high-pressure or intimidating. You’re encouraged to talk to, praise, and support your dog throughout the test.

If you’re short on time or your dog’s behavior issues need intensive work, Board and Train is often the quickest path to lasting improvement.

What should I bring when I drop off my dog?

We recommend bringing your dog’s regular food, any medications, and a favorite toy or blanket. Keeping familiar items can help your pup settle in more easily.

Will my dog remember me after the program?

Yes, dogs are excellent at recognizing their family members. In fact, they’ll likely be thrilled to show you their newly learned manners and skills when it’s time to head home.

What if my dog doesn’t show improvement?

While most dogs make considerable strides in our program, some may require additional sessions or ongoing support. We’ll work with you to ensure continued progress even after the initial stay.

How soon can I expect to see progress?

This varies depending on factors like your dog’s temperament, the specific issues you’re addressing, and how often you practice at home. Some owners notice small changes after just one or two sessions, while deeper behavioral issues may require a more extended commitment.
